Idles OK but stalls in Drive 200 1978

Thanks to help here I swapped over my alternator yesterday with a $75 replacement from the wrecker's yard.
So far so good, voltage up, everything running nicely, until this morning.
I had a little trouble starting and when it did start as soon as I selected Drive it stalled, it did this numerous times before I managed to get to the end of the street before it stalled for good, I tried keeping the revs up by keeping the brake down but no good, will idle but won't go.
A couple of days before I swapped the alternator it was threatening to cut out, when I changed the alternator yesterday it seemed to have righted itself, but now this.
The old yellow fridge is now two streets away spoiling someones view from their lounge room, any ideas? It's a fuel injected model, not carburettor.
