700 series angular wheel bearing/hub assembly 700 1989

Can these "use & replace" bearings be re-packed?

I was surprised to discover that the bearing is split into two halves. I could slide out the outter half. It revealed the large bearing race inside, and all the grease.

Is it generally a safe thing to clean out the old grease (125,000 miles) and repack? What is a good procedure?

Or is this an invitation to trouble loosening/losing those bearings?

I have no reason to think anything is wrong with the assembly, other than I took it off to have a look while doing brake work.
