Knock and no start 200 1990

Hi,
This morning i started my car ('82 265 with '90 B230F with K-jet injection) after rotating the fan and water pump shaft/pulley by hand over a small angle. (I wanted to see if i could tell the difference between my cam and a k cam i have, and was trying to see a lobe through the oil filler cap)

The car started easily but with a deep sounding knock (it never previously had this). Each time the motor was subsequently turned over, the knock stayed but it got a harder to start until it would not at all. No fuel pump sound can be heard... but all fuses are ok. The knock sounded like it was coming from the lower rear end of the motor... but i may be wrong.

Fixing the pumps would be my first concern but after that i don't know much at all...
Could rotating the water pump shaft have stuffed something up? Any ideas??

Thanks,
Julian
