How does one know if this is not a fake?

My parents are still looking for the Mercedes Sl that they want. We went and looked at one today and 1983 500SL AMG that was suposidly brought over from Germany. The car had different wheels, ground effects/spoliler then the regualr ones. It looks like it might be real, but How is one able to tell. Shouldn't "AMG" be written in the engene and interior compartments? Was this pretty much just like the Volvo Rs or M series BMWs?
Thanks and happy bricking
