i know what you mean. and believe it or not this is the second time i've replaced a thermostat. this time i used thermostat i ordered on line, not a volvo brand but from a well respected site. the gasket did not fit nicely in the housing, there was a lot of extra space. no matter how buch i tightened it, it would still leak.
i actually sheared it off when i was trying to loosen it to attempt to re-adjust it.

thanks everyone for all the advice. i feel a lot better about the whole situation now.
