Rear axle differences 120-130

The shafts on the newer rear end aren't tapered? Are you sure about that? You mean at the bearing race?

In any event, I don't think the free play is likely the problem. If the later axles are indeed untapered, I don't think they'd fit...but if you need the shims, I'd expect them to be the same. Later rear though is a dana 30, early is the 27. I wouldn't be inclined to try to mix/match.

My money is on a bad wheel bearing.

Keep in mind too that there iis the black car at the farmhouse with a rear end. You're welcome to it. I think its the early type, but don't remember for sure.
