Trailer towing with a Volvo 760 (B280F) this thing is unreal!! ;) 700

I have a nice 1987 Volvo 760 GLE with a B280F at 250,000kms.

Runs well, and is still quite tight suspension wise (bushings all look decent).

I recently installed a "Draw-Tite" brand hitch myself, which went on with ease. It comes complete with 7 bolts that thread into the weld nuts, you must remove the original tow hook and modify the rear facia to clear the receiver. The fit was decent, but not as good as the factory original (doesn't fit behind the facia all that well), but it was certainly MUCH cheaper.... and the local bone yards wanted a lot of money for a rusty used Volvo hitch without the draw bar!

Anyhow.... the three weld nuts under the exhaust were full of undercoating, a quick thread chase with a tap and they were clear. In 20 minutes, I had the thing torqued on and ready to tow.

I also installed a proper trailer light module which doesn't affect the bulb out sensor. It requires straight power from the battery or other location under the dash (ie: the amplifier under the dash has a decent gauge wire that you can tap off of). It picks up signal from the turn signals, converts it to a 2 light system, but doesn't draw current from the signal source, instead it draws current from the 12V feed you run (I already had a large wire in the trunk for a stereo system, so I fed it from there). They call these modules "Circuit protectors", and a regular duty one is fine for most small trailers.

Anyhow, I race a Fiat X1/9, have a large dual axle open trailer and now have a nice tow rig!!!! It tows this thing like it isn't even there!!! (original U-joints!!!!!), I am quite surprised, I used to tow all my stuff with a Chevy G-20 full size van.

I'm well under the 3300 lb limit, and the tongue weight is almost too light (I have to move the car a bit forward, the trailer is so well balanced).

Anyhow, I just wanted to offer my experience with towing such a heavy load with my 760 (some people cringe at the fact it is a V-6, but they must be thinking the B28F, the B280F is a fine motor..... the valves have never been adjusted (we are the original owners), and the motor is so quiet, makes great power, and I bet it will easily hit 300K kms. I could only wish the interior plastic was as good as the rest of the car!! ;)

The circuit protector is a must for lights..... otherwise your bulb out sensor will fail (I saw a post asking about this, and no one actually brought up that there is a module you can get to avoid this problem). It is easy enough to install (bought mine in Toronto, ON Canada for $65 Cnd).

Cheers
