Bearing noise ?? from front wheel 700 1989

For over a year I hear a slight rumbling noise from the left front wheel, gets worse when loaded (turning right) less when not (left).
Is getting worse and I suspect the whel bearings. I understand this is a whole unit replacement to the tune of $110.
Has anyone tried re greasing the bearings, how did it work??
Not sure how much longer I can go with this. OR
Is it something else?
Any way to check if it's the bearings?????
