No Overdrive on '91 240 200

My car won't go into overdrive. I purchased a 'new' solenoid from ebay (looks like it may have been refurbished, but that's okay). It worked for about 36 hours, then kaput! The downshift light (orange arrow) had not been illuminated, but is now since the additional turmoil. It is a second car and is not driven much and certainly not at speed, but when the A/C is on and driving about 40 you can hear & feel a whirring that lasts about 1.5-2 seconds and then subsides for about 4-5 seconds, and the reoccurs. I assume this is the car trying to shift into Overdrive. (without AC it is hardly noticeable) It is past due on a transmission fluid change, could this be the problem? Would it be the overdrive relay or more likely the transmission is dead? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!
