Trick to removing rear view mirror?

Hi all,

I wanted to swap the rear view mirror from our parts car ('91 244) into our '92 244 (‘92’s mirror has silvering around the edges flaking off). I broke the mirror mount plastic cover on the parts car when removing it. The plastic was quite brittle.

Does anybody have experience with and suggestions for removing this plastic cover without breaking it? It is held to the roof with prong clips molded into the part.

And now, a second, ancillary question if I may. Every 240 mirror mount cover I have seen has faded to a dingy yellow that just doesn't match the headliner. Has anybody had any success in painting or cleaning the cover?

Thanks, and happy bricking.

Glen
