Temperature Gauge Drops on Acceleration 700

I changed the alternator belt on my '89 740 and now find the water temperature gauge needle drops to near zero when I accelerate. If the car is idling and I depress the gas pedal for a second or so and then release it the water temperature gauge drops and then returns to the normal middle position. Could changing the alternator belt have caused this problem? I don't believe I disturbed anything related to the water temperature sensor and certainly not the temperature gauge. The gauge was working properly before I changed the alternator belt.
