Engine cutting out. Now it cranks but won't fire. Suggestions for a novice? 1992

1992 240 Wagon.

"Check engine" light came on first. Within a day or so the car began to cut out while driving (especially when slowing down and stopping), then it became difficult to start and keep started. Now the car cranks but won't fire. So far as I can tell the car is getting fuel. I don't know much about testing this, but when I removed the (return?) hose from the fuel pressure regulator and cranked the car, there was a strong flow of gas. I also tried pinching off this hose to see if the regulator might be broken. No change. All the fuses look fine.

My skills at car repair are fairly basic, but I'm hoping not to just hand this over to a mechanic and say 'fix it'. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
