Ignition timing... need education... 200 1986

I was messing with my distributor and so I decided to attempt my first timing light use...

I believe I set the mark on the crankshaft to 10 degrees before top dead center (it was near the "10" mark on the indexed plastic part of the timing belt cover)... upon first inspection of the ignition timing (with the light) it was running at right about top dead center ... so I turned the distributor to get it closer to the 12 + or - 2 BTDC that Bentley calls for ... if I'm reading that correctly...

anyway the car runs ok but is now pinging upon acceleration which it didn't do before adjusting the timing...

there's probably a lot I didn't do correctly so let me know what you think whoever knows more about this than me (all of you probably)

thanks,

jack
