cracks in head pipe, 'dimples' in catalytic converter. Replace Both? 200 1986

The muffer shop guy said I should replace the head pipe instead of having it welded. It's cracked at 3 of the original welds. He also said it looks like someone beat on the cat to crimp it in on the honeycomb which must have been loose. It doesn't rattle now. Did any of the cats have this 'dimpling'? The spacing appears to be pretty regular. It did pass emissions (CO) a few months ago. I'll probably buy the pipe from FCPGroton and put it on myself, but I'm wondering if I need a cat as well. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.
