Intermittent brake warning light? 200 1988

The brake warning light on the dash has come on several times this week. However, it has been going back off after restart, or after a minute or up to 10 minutes of driving. There is no loss of fluid. I was under the car and there is no leaking of any kind. The pedal feels fine, and braking is fine.

I pulled the octopus sensor wire and grounding it turns on the dash light. I've rigged a wire extension so my wife can disconnect the sensor next time it happens and see if the light stays on (i.e. some other ground source).

What is going on? Is the car safe to drive?
