240 Leaky Header Pipe Fix 200

Greetings,
Has anyone had a leaky header pipe? The pipe that is in between the exhaust manifold and the cat leaks on one of my 240's. They crack at the Y behind the heat shield. Has anyone removed the heat shield and welded the crack at the Y? I'm about ready to remove mine to properly weld it. Of course if I didn't mind spending the money I could buy a new header pipe. Any suggestions? Has anyone been successful at welding it without it recracking? Thank You!
