Service light in 1992 740 700

I recently acquired a 1992 740 wagon. After about a week of driving the service light started to come on every time the car was started, regardless of whether or not it is already warm. It goes out within 2 minutes. It smells like it's running a bit rich most of the time. But maybe I'm just imagining it.

What might be causing this? Some sort of sensor? I'd like to avoid a trip to the dealer. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom
