PNP switch failing - worst case scenario ?? 900 1995

Transmission upshift arrow is flashing; W & E switches are flashing; all the classic signs of failure of the (in)famous PNP switch. It apparently is failing intermittently, because when I first went out in it this a.m., it started out in Winter mode, but from then on, downshifted and upshifted fine.

My question: I'm about ready to go on a 1200 mile trip in this thing. Can this switch failure lock it into a LOWER gear ? Driving in Winter mode on a road trip would be a minimal inconvenience, given that it's primarily highway driving to & from. However, being locked out of higher gears on a long trip obviously would be problematic.

If there's no way it can lock out of the higher gears, I'll probably just put up with it, cover the blinking lights while I'm gone, and mess with it when I return. I'm still considering DIY, but everything I read says it's a real bear, and for only 2 hours labor (local quote), I may bite the bullet and let somebody do it who I can yell at if it's wrong.........

Thanks !!!!!
