New owner! -- Mystery UK engine code '52'

I'm a Canadian living in London and I've just purchased my first Volvo. It's a 1988 740 GL wagon (E-Reg estate). I'm used to much more expensive cars, but I'm quitting my job to start a company and I needed a low-budget, safe, quality car.

A couple of questions.

1) I've tried looking up my engine type using the VIN charts I've seen on line, but I can't find my code.
