ODB use 900

I'm sorry but I am new to Volvos and am having a time of it. Can anyone tell me if the check engine light must be on for a valid ODB code to appear? I have a 940 turbo with one problem after another but no check engine codes at the moment. Just fixed a knock engine problem that I detected through the odb but have another problem 2 days later. Thanks!
