auto tranny clutch pack slips-somebody know this...????? 200 1980

This only happens when trying to drive forward-about 70% slippage.In REVERSE the car is fine!My son was driving car last week and knocked it into reverse,then quickly put it into drive again.Unrelated or not-just all the info I can share . Wouldn't CLUTCHES slip both directions if failing?I'll work on car this weekend but other than visual inspection yielding nothing-am I junking the old beast?TIA and a GOOD WEEKEND TO ALL > mark
