I had the first generation metro that I drove for tens of thousands of miles. It was in illinois too and it handled find in the snow, Granted I never got in an accident in all the years I had it, but thats cause I don't drive like or have the karma of Kyle ;-) I mean hell his car wrecks itself. I also think that since his mom is giving him the money that she'd be quite pissed at hearing the word Volvo mentioned for another vehicle option. But I could be mistaken.
