Diffuclty level of replacing heater valve/hoses?FED UP WITH WAITING FOR MECHANIC 700 1990

Fed up with waiting for my mechanic.(he's fully booked and i've taken a number(actually he's taken my #)for a week. He's still not called me to take my car in.

I am thinking of replacing the stat,rad(14 YRS),heater hoses/valve(14 yr),which my mechanic advised against replacing BUT is strongly advised by this list for >8 yr old rads. He's of the if it aint broke, dont fix school.

I've got the parts. In the past Ive replaced a Mercedes Behr radiator with a Nissens(similar setup),volvo brake pads and discs, and cleaned the flame trap and hose brand brass nipple etc.
I think there should be no problem with replacing the rad myself(2 row metallic Tropical Nissens)
but any advice on the heater hoses/valve is welcome.
Would there be more or less DEXTERITY involved in reaching near the firewall?
Do I need to use PVC plumber's tape to thread the fan switch into the rad,or would it interfere with the NEGATIVE electrical contact.
thanks
tOM
