Brake Booster Problem S90-V90

My uncle's V90 has a braking problem. It seems that when the pedal is pressed the pedal is firm and there is no power braking, only mechanical. A mechanic friend of his said it was the brake booster itself, is this a common problem? The mechanic said he could hear an air leak when the pedal was pressed. My 244Ti had a similar problem and it was the brake booster check valve? (small white circular item that feeds into the booster) Could this be the problem, does the V90 have the check valve?

I am going to look at it tomorrow to get a better diagnosis is there anything I should look for or a way to diagnose the problem more easily? Also if it is the booster is it an easy repair?

Thank you for any help
