Door trim attachment 200

The rearmost clip on the front passenger door trim outside near the door handle is located almost up against the plastic endcap of the support channel in the trim piece (at the rear edge of the door). In trying to replace this clip with a new one, I cannot remove the broken piece of the old clip that remains in the channel without what seems to be excessive (damaging) force.
.
If not removed, this piece occupies the spot for the new clip. Can this plastic be pulled out in pieces with a needlenose without damaging the edges of the channel? Any tips or experience?? Thanks
