fuel pump relay, 1990 740 700

No start; Getting no fuel to fuel rail. When I jumped the relay and it pumped fine. Pulled cover off of relay and all looks good; no corrosion, rust etc.. Relay seems to work intermittently. I'm trying not to replace parts unless i'm sure they are bad. I was expecting insides of relay to be visibly corroded. Anyone know any way to definitively test relay? I can get the pumps to work when I install the uncovered relay and manually operate the contacts. It takes a long time for thius car to start but runs fine when started. Appreciate all input. Thanks
Mike
