Step on gas, won't accelerate/Check Engline Light on 200 1989

About 2 weeks ago I noticed that when I stopped at a light, then stepped on the gas, the car would barely accelerate. It doesn't happen every time, but it seems to happen more and more often. The check engine light came on 2 days ago and I haven't had a chance to get it to my mechanic yet. What can it be? Am I doing damage by driving it? It also used to start right away, but now it starts and dies, starts and dies a few times in the morning.

Thanks.
