Trouble Installing AW 71 700 1987

Having a really hard time getting the replacment AW71 back in....

I am using a tranny jack, and I am able to get the tranny to withing about 1/2 In. of the bellhousing(s) mating. When I removed the old tranny I left the T/C attached to the flywheel.

I am aware of the 2 guide pins on the axle that have to fit into the slots on the T/C. Would it be easier if I removed the T/C from the flywheel and fit it onto the tranny axle and then tried to install the box?

Or is there a another/better way?
Thanks,
JJ
