Trouble Installing AW 71 700 1987

The torque converter HAS to be installed in the trans before attaching to engine. This is the only correct way to install them. Get yourself a new front seal for trans because the one in it is surely trash now from wallowing the TC in it trying to get it to line up. The converter is also supposed to be taken out with the trans. While you have converter out, drain and refill with fresh fluid. good luck, rcs
