To complete my trifecta of cool Volvo picture posts, here's a nice 245, from 1976, I spotted for sale in Mount Pleasant, just across the bridge from Charleston, S.C.
I'm not selling the car (though I wish I could buy it!), but I figured that the Brickboarders in the Charleston area might appreciate a heads-up on this nice looking 240 wagon.
I've called the owner and he's asking for $1000 or best offer. The car has a little over 200,000 miles on it, which isn't bad for a twenty-eight year old car! (Of course, the odometer could have broken . . .) I think he said he is the fourth owner, with the first two owners being older gentlemen who supposedly garaged the car fairly often. The third was a friend of the current owner, who lived up in Summerville, South Carolina, so there was not much danger of rust there. The current owner has had the car for no more than a year, though (I want to say he said like four months, but I'll give him some leeway), so I'm kind of curious as to why he's getting rid of it so quickly.
This Brick began its life in Seattle, but even now it doesn't have any *major* rust, as far as I could see (sorry, but I'm not sure of how to do a full-over inspection!). The paint looks to be in very good condition--there's none of that clearcoat missing, like what happened to my 240 after twelve years, so I suspect this one has been repainted. The paint is chipped in some places, and it appears that metal where those are has rusted, so it hasn't been repainted really recently (no quick-sale Maaco job, I guess). But, overall, the car's exterior looks really good.
The interior is okay, with the seats being covered and things being a little dusty. One thing to note--the car, a wagon, has a sunroof. It's obviously not a factory option, and the current owner confirmed it was aftermarket, though he didn't have any further information. Therefore, it may not be quite as safe if it were to roll over.
My visit to the car was on my own initiative one evening without the owner, so I haven't done a test drive (or very much at all), but the guy seemed friendly enough and I would expect would be happy to set up a test drive. He said he converted the air conditioning to R-134a, and he also mentioned that it leaked a little oil or something, so one might one to check out what both of those statements really amount to.
I hope the owner isn't a Brickboard member, and if he is, I don't mean to be stepping on any toes by writing this post, but I want Brickboarders to know what good deals are out there. If you're in the market for a 245, perhaps a fixer-upper, and live in South Carolina, you might want to check this one out!
