Driving home from the grocery store today, I was dismayed to discover that my volvo had suddenly decided that it would like to compete with the space shuttle for loudness on take off. When I got home I looked under that car and the header pipe had completely cracked and broken in half right behind the Y section of the pipe, a couple of inches from the cat. I checked out the entire exhaust system, and it all seems to be in pretty good shape, including the header. Even where it broke, there is not much rust, just a little surface rust. That seems to be a weak spot in the system, and I noticed that the weight of the exhaust system seems to put a lot of stress on that one area that broke.
That said, is it possible to weld together the header pipe? Like I said, it doesn't appear to be too rusty and seems to be in overall good shape. I would like to not have to replace the whole thing, because I'm moving in a couple of weeks and need to save as much money as possible, plus the fact that it seems like a waste of a good pipe (also I'm just cheap!) And if so, what do you expect the cost might be to do this, as I don't have the tools or space to do it myself. I'd like to get this fixed as soon as possible, I'm embarrassed to drive my car because everyone looks at me like I'm crazy and covers their ears in order to avoid permanent hearing damage! Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post!
