Pre-heat duct / flexible pipe questions... 200

My 1987 245DL wagon has a flexible duct from the exhaust manifold to the airbox. I've read several posts here on Brickboard advocating the removal of this gizmo, so as not to bake the Airbox temp sensor and the Air Mass Meter. This makes sense to me, but my question is will doing this adversely effect performance in the winter when the thermometer bottoms out below zero (F)?? Do other brick owners reconnect the duct in the winter?? Thanks.
