Knock knock, who's there? 444-544

Ahh - I see - the piston skirt slapping against the bore, not the piston being flung slightly too far and into the head. I just had the head off a couple of months ago - to put new lifters in with the new cam. I checked the visible portion of the bores for unusual marks and didn't see any, although they looked slightly slicker than they should there was still a tiny bit of crosshatching. I wouldn't have seen any scoring or wear on the piston sides, though. Would piston slap become mor pronounced when the plug wire is pulled? I've heard that is a good diagnostic for a rod knock, don't know about piston slap.

The big bore rebuild was almost 20 years ago, although only 50K-ish miles have been put on it since. I can't recall for certain if we did anything with the wrist pins or not, to my best recollection we just left them alone as they seemed to be in perfect shape. Like the cam bearings.

Yes, I'd probably have a big problem with compression with a stroker crank. My head came from a racing car and was heavily shaved down (in addition to lots of port work, big valves, and double valve springs). I had to work on it quite a bit for use on my 2.2 liter bottom end already. When I first got it the combustion chambers were only 38 cc's. I had to take out a lot of metal and ended up at 45 cc's - probably a little low for 2130 cc's, but I didn't think taking more metal out would be a good idea. So I put it together, crossed my fingers, and it seems to work just fine on 92 octane gas. Can't run 87 octane, though, I had about 1/3rd of a tank in it when I started working on it, and it pinged very easily on the way to the gas station running on that.
