Difficult Front Wheel Bearing Seals 200 1988

I'm replacing the front wheel bearing seals on my 88 240 and am having a difficult time. I have read the posting at: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=682877
It is very helpful but I could use just a little more clarification.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
It seems the seal consists of two pieces, the rubber ring and the metal disc.
The rubber ring gets slipped onto the spindle thick side first.
The metal ring gets pressed into the hub and the hub is then slipped onto the spindle. Torquing the assembly will the seat the seal.
My first problem is the metal ring I have is just a little to big to press into the hub.
Also the whole process of seating the seal by torquing the assembly makes me uneasy.
Have I missed something?

Richard
