External tranny cooler vs new radiator Or Both? 200 1988

Dear Brickboard,
Having read archives regarding catastrophic loss of coolant into tranny; I'm considering taking the indie Volvo mechanic's advice and having an external AT cooler fitted. I don't do any towing (yet) but the Indobrick (251000kms) does do some nasty short-trip, stop-start, heavy traffic city driving and occasional full-load family camping trips. Can anyone give me an idea of a fair price range for having this work done? Is it a worthwhile preventative? Bearing in mind the 700/900 FAQ on the topic I should just replace the existing stock plastic radiator (age unknown). Or do both? Any experiences with this matter?
Thanks,
Mike
