Need help: car coughing 900 1992

Just got my 940 two weeks ago, drove it 1,000 miles to deliver to my wife, not a bother, except for an O2 light on the dash. I'm now working a 1,000 miles away and the cat needed to get to the vet, so my wife drove on even though the car was having problems:

> Engine is running rough right from cold start (she said 'coughing')
> Car is hesitating
> Underpowered on acceleration

Can anyone give me a steer as to what I can ask her to check out before she calls the garage; if she can get home she's got a spare car, so it could wait until I get back over in a couple of week's time. Also, can any garage check over the fault codes/O2 light?

Any advice appreciated, thanks. Neil
