testing new (used) fuel pump

I finally got the used fuel pump. I wanted to test it before I install it. (This is the single intank fuel pump for a 1995 940). The new (used) pump is totally dry (not dripping with fuel) - it says 12v and is the right number bosche (05804530330) part. Can I run a positive (from the battery) directly to the positive (12v) terminal on the pump and ground the ground (negative) to test it before installation?
