Gas smell in cabin and outside at front end at times. '96 960

My wife and I have been noticing a gas smell in and around our 960 wagon when we turn off the car and get out and also occasionally in the cabin while we are driving. It has no relation to having filled up the gas tank recently as it happens even when the tank is near empty. I have explored under the hood for leaking fuel lines etc and can't pinpoint anything. Does anone have any ideas about where this might likely be coming from or a good way to track it down?
