electric cooling fan doesn't turn off 700 1990

1990 740 wagon. There is an auxilary cooling fan in front of the radiator.. After turning off the engine, the fan kept running. I thought maybe the engine just needed to cool down more. AFter awhile, I unplugged the fan. The next day, after not driving the car anymore, when I plug the fan back in it is still running.

I am guessing there is a thermostat somewhere that runs this fan, and maybe it has gone bad. Any idea where to look? I started tracing wires but got lost in the loom. Or perhaps there is a relay for the fan that is stuck?

thanks

Mark
