ZF Tranny Gear visible?? 700 1987

I just bought an '87 740 for $250.00 mostly because it has an excellent body and nice seats. The engine is ruuning a little rough due to no airbox or filter and I think the air mass meter may be shot. Definitely in need of a throttle body cleaning as well. Anyway, jacked the car up to get a good look underneath and noticed I could see what looked like a gear visible on the bottom of the transmission. This is my first ZF tranny :-( and I'm not educated as to its appearance. Should I be seeing a gear in plain sight or is there a cover missing. (When I say gear, I mean a sproket-appearing device) It is a few inches forward of where it connects to the drive shaft, on the bottom, drivers side of middle. Any help is appreciated.
