Fershlugginer airbox thermostat! 200

1. I've never been real impressed with the gas mileage on my 1992 wagon/auto. 20 in suburban driving, 24-24.5 on the Interstate.

2. This spring it started dropping. Last tank before I left on a trip was 17.7.

3. Hmmmm. OX sensor? A mental light went on and I tried a little experiment. I yanked the preheat hose.

4. Hey! Not only did the mileage recover, but on the trip I got the best ever. Three times over 25 mpg. Not only that--I could run Plus instead of Premium.

5. That means...that for some months, and maybe for years, I've been baking the AMM with superheated air. That would also explain the need for premium gas--to resist knocking due to elevated cylinder temps.

6. As of today my AMM is still working perfectly. But is it doomed to an early death?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Doug Harvey
