I have a '90 740 that makes some cooling, liveable at outside temps of 90 or so, but isn't cold. It's been about the same the 3 years I've had the car. 225,000 mi. on the car. the boneyard has an '88 that has been switched apparently by Volvo, that's what the replacement sticker says, to R 132 6 years ago. The date is on the sticker also. Is it a good idea for me to get the condenser and/or reciever/dryer? Or any other parts? The compressor is possibly damaged by the wreck the car was in so I don't know about getting that. Also another car, '90 same as mine, that is not changed over has what appears to be a sort of newer compressor. It has a mfr. sticker that is like 'HDK' or similar. It seems to be a proper fit, not a rigged up thing. Didn't write it down so that may not be it exactly. I was thinking I'd get that compressor and let it drain fully, air shops say that it's best to drain the old oil for at least overnight, then swap in all the parts at once so I have air and can drive til I do the change. What signs of wear or of good condition are there for a used compressor? The pulley seems to turn ok but with some resistance inside, like the clutch is behaving properly. Does that sound right? I was thinking I could look at the filter and thus get some idea of how much wear there is before taking out the compressor.
I've talked to some Volvo shops and some air shops and they say that Volvos only make a 20 degree difference from outside to inside air in any case. I've seen many posts here about getting 40 degree air at the vents when doing it all correctly with R132. Any comments?
