battery idiot light 200 1989

Replaced my Alternator.
Now when I turn over the ignition the battery indicator idiot light goes off (yea!)

But now when I turn off the ignition and take the key out - the "battery" idiot light comes on and stays on. When I start it up again, out it goes...

My battery was fully dead, had to jump start the car to get it running.
Is this light just telling me that my battery needs charging? Will it go out once my system is charged?

Or did I hook up the alternator wrong?
