not another bad alternator. 700 1987

I have an 87 740 turbo wagon. I have had my alternator replaced 3 times already by the same mechanic. Tonight on the way back from a 3hr. trip the dash lights started to come on. You know brake light, battery light and the voltage guage on the dash would drop off to 10. This would come and go. Luckily we made it home. I am going to take a stab and say the voltage regulator. I am looking for some inputs. Am I making a good assumption as to what it could be. I do not want to take it back to the mechanic again. I am sure that he will try and get out of it this time and blame it on my bushings.
