gasket/ o-ring for distributor cap? 700 1991

i looked at the distributor cap in the dark with the car running at the suggestion of one my friends and i could see a pretty good firework show. when i shown the light on the area you could see about an 8th of an inch gap between the cap and the distributor you could even see the rotor button going around. im just wondering if there is a seal or o-ring or something that belongs there to keep the water out or if you can seal it with a gasket maker or something. the auto parts store nor my mechanic thought that was a good idea (for now at least)... any suggestions? thanks JWS
