Another B16 Question. 444-544 1953

What type of oil do you use in your B16? I was experiencing blue smoke with my B16 Amazon-S after using today's 10W30 detergent motor oil. A friend suggested I use a non-detergent oil and since then, the smoke has disappeared and oil consumption is negligible. I found that Valvoline and Shell both still make non-detergent ND oils, in 20SAE and 30SAE weights. I use the heavier oil since I only drive my vintage Volvos in the summer. Also, the 30 weight oil is recommended for the SU damping cylinders. I do not notice any smoke coming from my engine's crankcase tube or the oil cap, so the ND oil must be gumming up the works enough to stop the blowby.

A damaged head gasket usually results in anti-freeze on the dip stick, constant refilling of the radiator and a more whitish smoke from the tailpipe.

Good luck.
