"Headlight problems on my daughter's 86. When I turn the headlight switch to the first click, everything does what it's supposed to do. When I turn it to the second click to turn on the headlights, nothing comes on: no headlights, no parking lights, no cluster lights, nothing. At any switch position, I can pull the blinker lever back and get a flash of the high beams like it's designed."
Problem solved. Turned out to be that one of the wires on the cube relay above the brake pedal had melted. It looked just like the picture Aye Roll had posted. I took Art's suggestion on the repair: cleaned the plastic connector up and sanded off the burned section. The rest of the connector was fine. Then I installed a new female spade connector (designed for 10-12 wire) on the offending wire. Lastly, I taped it all up for extra protection. It sounds a little funky, but actually looks like a good clean repair. The female spade connector looks heavier than the one that was on there. Art, I think you're right in concluding that it was the connection between the wire and the connector that failed.
Thanks for everyone's help. I learned something new about these beasts.
