Transmission Fluid 700 1990

Okay, so I am new to learning how to maintain cars and I have a question to pose to anyone who can answer this... (i hope that this the right message board)

I recently inherited a 1990 740 GLE Volvo station wagon. Unfortunately, I have no previous records as to how the car was maintained before. Anyways, I was wondering about transmission fluid. I was told that I may want to consider having it flushed and replaced. But, a friend of mine told me that if I didn't know how it was maintained before then it may be worse on the engine to have the ATF fluid flushed out.

Can I get a second opinion?

Thanks!
