Before I started this project, the car was running good but had a higher idle after driving than when started and warmed up in the garage. With the carbs rebuilt and no vacuum leaks, it was suggested that the distributor (centrifugal advance)needs cleaning/rebuilding. A vacuum advance distributor was suggested also so I got one used.
When I installed the replacement distributor, I went through the static timing steps to get it started then would use a timing light to get a more accurate setting. When I started it, the engine ran really rough and backfired through the carbs and the engine could not be rev'd up, it would cough and backfire even more and usually die. No adjustment to either the timing or carbs would help. At this point I thought the distributor was bad, so I went back the original centrifugal advance distributor, cleaned it and oiled it, so no wear on the weights, springs seem OK but did find a piece of the flat metal from an old set of points down there with the weights so I thought maybe this was the problem.
I then installed the original centrifugal advance distributor. At least it ran good with this one. Got new points, condensor, rotor, and plugs, then set the dwell and went through the static timing again and it made no difference. The engine still has all the problems it had with the other distributor.
OK, I must have done something wrong somewhere. With the timing?
I could really use some help.
