Weak spark, how do you test a coil? 444-544 1961

Well now that I have the time to work on my old car, I can't get it to start. I checked the spark coming from the coil and I could only hear it, I could not see it, and it could not bridge any appreciable gap. So I am looking at a week spark problem on a 6-volt electrical system. The manual suggested testing the Coil, but I don't seem to have that part of the manual. Can I just try putting in a VW 6-volt coil or some other generic one? Are volvo coils internally resisted? Any info would be appreciated, in the mean time I will double check for faulty connections.

Thanks in advance,

Mario M.
